Prepare
your 2 to 6 year olds to READ!
READING PREPARATION ACTIVITIES include
those which develop vocabulary, sorting and classification skills, and
understanding of relationships between sounds we hear and the letters
we use to represent them. Lakeview's sorting sets provide for
all of these... and in an interesting, inviting way. Children
are drawn to the interesting, realistic looking objects which they are
able to manipulate as they sort and classify.
Introductory sorting sets, aimed at the 18 month (with adult supervision) to 4 year old, helps a child learn to identify and classify familiar things like animals, fruits, vegetables, and vehicles.
Intermediate
sorting
activities geared to the 3 to 5 year old introduce more difficult
vocabulary and require more discrimination skills as the child
differentiates between kinds of sea animals or types of sports
equipment.
Advanced
sorting kits prepare the 4 to 6 year old to make fine discriminations
and learn more difficult vocabulary such as types of sharks, whales
and dinosaurs. Children in the 3 to 6 age range are also
able to develop letter sorting and discrimination skills with our letter
sorting sets. These can also be used to reinforce
letter sounds so the child learns that the letter s says "Ssss"
like in snake.
Once the child has learned to visually and
auditorally discriminate objects and letters, he moves on to
understanding the relationship between sounds and the letters which
represent them. Children of 3 and 4 are usually able
to identify the first sounds of words first. Initially, they enjoy a
game of "I spy" with objects that they choose to match the
sound the teacher has given eg. I spy something that starts with m,
and the child chooses the monkey object.
Next, they can practice
"hearing" the
beginning sound and matching objects
which
start with that sound to the letters in our
Beginning Sound
Chart,
Animal Beginning Sound game, and later the
S blend and
R Blend
activities.
Usually, the ending sound is the next
thing they are able to identify, so the
ending sound sets A and
B can
be used.
Finally the child will be able to hear the
middle sounds of phonetic words, and the
short vowel sorting provides
great practice for differentiating between the sounds made by a, e, i,
o, and u, in phonetic words. All the while, the child enjoys using
objects which expand his vocabulary, attract and hold his attention,
and incorporate tactile, visual and auditory learning, as they prepare
to learn to read.

Phonics Activities make READERS out of 4 to 6 year olds!
