Green Level Materials move
the child of 5 to 7 years to the next level of reading, to
words which are phonetic except for the phonogram (also called
digraphs or dipthongs) they introduce. As each new phonogram
is introduced, the child progresses through the reading steps
for that phonogram, reinforcing his understanding with each
material. For example, the child will start with the Green
Object Box of a common phonogram such as "ch",
and follow that with the Green Word and Picture cards
for "ch". These boxes, with the letter ch in red,
introduce words like chip and branch, to give the child lots
of reading practice with concrete "cues" to help
him. Once he has mastered reading "ch" with
cues, he moves to the "ch" Green Word
List and
then to the Green Word Booklet to practice
reading more words without object or picture cues.
When he has experienced success with all of these materials, he moves to reading complete sentences with the Green Sentences and Objects and the Green Sentences and Pictures for ch, and demonstrating his comprehension by manipulating the objects, then pictures. He now moves to reading the Green Phonogram Story Book, "Lunch", where he will read the ch sound in context, without red highlighting to help him identify the phonogram. He experiences success once more, because all of the words in the stories are phonetic, except those with the ch phonogram and those sight words he has already been introduced to before he started reading blue sentences. The child continues to work his way through the rest of the phonogram boxes, booklets, lists, sentences and stories, becoming ever more confident as his reading skills and vocabulary expand exponentially. After a great deal of reading practice with many phonograms, we turn our focus to spelling and the many intricacies of the English language, with the introduction of the Green Composite Folders to children 6 to 8 years old. These folders bring together lists of words which contain phonograms which make the same sound, but are spelled differently. With the "ch" folder, there is a list of "ch" words and one of "tch" words like match, etc. so that the child will see the different ways to make one sound, and note which words use which phonogram, so that he may spell them correctly. Other phonograms, like "ee" may have many composite folder lists, one for each phonogram that makes that sound.(ea, ey, y, e-e, etc.) With the completion of the phonograms, the child has an expanded reading capacity which now includes thousands of words.
The continuous
success the child has experienced through this carefully guided
reading program gives him the confidence to journey on to Non-Phonetic
(sight) reading .
