Blue Level Materials increase reading difficulty to include 4 or more letter phonetic words, and are appropriate for 4 to 6 year olds who have completed the Pink Level Materials.  

Blue Object Boxes are used in the same way as the pink object boxes, and continue to expand the child's vocabulary and reading ability as they introduce the child to longer phonetic words such as helmet, basket, and skunk.  Blue Picture and Word Cards continue to expand the child's reading skills with pictures and words such as cricket, blanket, and ribbon as do the Blue Picture Sheets, which are more difficult because they present 6 pictures at once.

  More advanced reading continues when the child progresses to the Blue Word Booklets and then to the Blue Word Lists where the child reads without the "cues" provided by objects and pictures.  At this point, sight words such as "the", "has", and "was" are introduced as words to memorize to prepare for the next exciting step... reading sentences ! 

 With the extensive vocabulary and phonetic reading ability the child has acquired through the pre-reading, pink and blue materials, he now moves on to reading and comprehending the content of complete sentences.  The Blue Sentences and Objects introduce complete ideas for the child to focus on and perform, giving him necessary practice in reading comprehension.  As the child works through a sentence such as "Can the egg fit in the basket?", he demonstrates his understanding by holding the basket to see if the egg will fit in it, thus answering the question and reinforcing his confidence in his abilities to translate the written word into action.  

Blue Sentences and Pictures continue this practice with less concrete, but still interesting, pictures.  Having conquered the Blue sentences, the child is ready to experience success reading complete Blue Phonetic Story Books.  These provide the child with interesting reading so that he enjoys success and gathers new information with complete stories about magnets, plants, and eggs, etc.  

 

These carefully graded materials have brought the child success and enabled him to experience "READING FOR MEANING "
